Software installation/maintenance/uninstallation on OS X is probably my biggest peeve with he OS and by simply adding yet another way to install/manage/uninstall software the Mac App Store only makes things worse.

There's really no practical need to - the space they take up is negligible, and the only things affected by leftover preferences & caches are the programs that created them.
